2月8日 Dinner Dance 2007The best yet !!
How can I tell you the satisfaction it gives me to see so many great people, both friends and family, enjoying themselves at the Dinner Dance this year on January 27th. A great deal was due to the tireless energies of the Scholarship Funds Comittee, but most amazingly to the work of my sister in law Reyna and her two helpers Odilia Lizzaraga and Teresa Adame. I asked Reyna to help last year as I was getting burned out trying to do everything myself (I´m not too good at delegating responsibility). So I asked Reyna to help do the ticket sales (I´m also not so good of a salesman) and she single handedly sold about 150-160 tickets through all her connections in the local and state government. She was a candidate for the local mayor of Santiago last year !!
She should have won, but somew people don't know what's good for them. Anyway, I asked her to do this again this year and she came up with over 250 with Odilia and Teresa. Needless to say, this already gauranteed we'd do better than last year, but I figured if we got the 300 , we would be doing fine as we raised the price of the ticket to 500 pesos this year and both the band and the hotel maintained their price from last year. With the help from our other helpers, like Elenita Oliver, who's been with us since the very beginning, Carlos and Susan from the Scuba Shack, also co founders, our President Froilan and his lady Maria Luisa, my daughter Susan and my son Carlos, who brought all their friends, Nigel and Freda Rumford, also great supporters, we finally came in at 370 tickets or thereabouts and just about SOLD OUT!!
You can check them all out on the fotos section of this same website at the Dinner Dance 2007 foto album. This was only about 70 of the 350 fotos taken of the event !! And that's not counting the BEST of Colima Magazine's pics which should come out soon with a lot of all the cool people that were there at the dance.
But the greatest part was that everyone enjoyed themselves so much that nobody wanted to stop dancing . The music stopped at 1:00am but about ten tables decided to keep chattering away. When we left at 3:00am finally, most were still there. The other great part was that there were NO complaints. The food was hot & delicious (Fruit salad,Turkey Breast sliced w/Mushroon Gravy and Black Forest Chocolate Cake) served on time, well served, the music was great and the decoration was beautiful in the Silver on White theme we had this year. Thanks to Ramon Serrano and his Staff at the Tesoro Hotel, they did an excellent job !!
Although there is probably 70% Mexican to 30% Americans and Canadians, we are still doing great and this, of course, just means we can help more kids at school. The Fund is now sponsoring 28 kids this year and we hope to get to 35 this next school year. Last year we graduated 9 kids fron High School (Preparatoria) and all went on to College. We started out ten new kids in Middle School (Secundaria) and hopefully we can replace the five graduating this year and add three to five more next school year in August 07. The kids in Secundaria costs less because they are not paying inscription fees like the kids in Preparatoria, so we have to keep a balance of the two sections.
The funding comes from the interest that is made on the investments we have in one local bank in a Mutual Fund that is paying well, probably the best on the market that is both safe and available when we need it. We are always checking different banks to see who's doing best, but we now have over 450,000.00 pesos in the Mutual Fund and that is allowing us to cover the expenses for our kids for the whole year , and should cover them for quite a few years to come !!
We do, however, always look for ways to increase these funds, so we can increase the amount of kids we can help. We do not give money directly to the kids. What we do is provide the student with an ID from the Fund and he/she takes it to local stores to get the school supplies, uniforms, shoes and books that are required by their schools. Other wise, funds like the government gives out, often wind up in the hands of the parents and don't always go to the student's direct school needs. We figure oiur system is better in that respect.
Like I said, THE BEST YET, although last year was great too. I thank the Good Lord for all the help that He has sent me and the Fund to keep up the work that the Reynolds and all the Founders started. He has personally make a great situation of a very sad loss for me and Pera. We thank you all that send your blessings and donations and may the Good Lord keep you all well and healthy.
